Netflix Cue (Concept)

A feature idea to make streaming Netflix more like DVD Netflix. Designed & prototyped within 24 hours of reading the inciting article.

The idea of Netflix Cue was inspired by this article by David Pierce of The Verge.

The intent is to build your “Cue” off of your My List selections. I have rarely ever gone back to my ever growing list to actually watch these movies. But with a little pressure to ‘[poo] or get off the pot’ from the olden days of DVD rentals, maybe we can finally start getting through that backlog. And in my mind, removing a movie from you Cue can still keep it in My List. I wanted the Cue to be the lowest stakes it could be to get you to power through.

The name was of course inspired by the DVD “Queue” of the old Netflix. But it’s also “your cue” to just jump right in and start watching.

All concept’d, wireframed (ish), designed, and prototyped from a few hours on the 19th and a few on the 20th. All done within 24 hours of the article being posted.

Within the first few hours of reading the article, I threw together some wireframe sketches.

Designing and prototyping in Figma over the next day.

Video Walkthrough

The Prototype was built for TV and desktop, so if you’re on mobile these videos may help. Footage is from the actual prototype which can be clicked through at the end of the page.

A little highlight draws attention to the new feature.

Gives you limited options, like the classic DVD Netflix experience. And the ability to check out the trailers before hand.

After your movie, you have the option to jump back to your Cue, which replaces the last movie slot with the next from your list. You can also edit your Cue, remove and re-arrange items on it.

This is built for Desktop and TV interfaces in mind, my main platforms for streaming movies and TV. Best viewed on a desktop.

Final Thoughts

Hey, I’d use it.

After hours of browsing aimlessly as well as adding things to my list I never actually go back to, this could simplify the choice. I watch what I have or I “send it back”. I think that pressure to make the choice or send it packing may very well get me to finally watch Sword of Destiny.

Maybe even a setting to open Netflix directly into your Cue? The possibilities are figuratively endless.
